Hurricane season in Florida lasts from June 1 to November 30. During the 2021 season, weather experts predict that there will be about 20 named storms. One way to prepare for the hurricane season is to ensure your outdoor living space is ready. While there’s no way to control the gravity of a hurricane or storm, you can always control how prepared you are before, during, and after. Check your screen anchors and screen door latches.
A screened-in lanai or pool enclosure is a great amenity during the summer months. However, the frame of these enclosures should be reinforced before hurricane season. Heavy winds can easily rip off the screen and topple its frame if they aren’t secured in place. When this happens, the frame can get carried away and damage the surrounding property.
It is also important to ensure your screen door latches work. A weak grip can cost you your door in one strong wind gust. Aside from the latch, check if your screen door lock works so it keeps your door in place during the storm. If any of these parts are unstable, replace them immediately.

Prepare your outdoor living space and trees.
During a hurricane or storm, the exterior of your property and your outdoor living space receive the heaviest beating from strong wind gusts and drenching rain. Remove any furniture or anything that isn’t securely attached to the ground, including:
- Patio furniture
- Grill
- Lawn chairs
- Pool equipment
These things are easily blown away by heavy wind unless they are firmly secured. A lot can happen when items like grills fly around in a storm, such as damaging your property or hurting other people. Don’t forget to prepare your trees before a hurricane as well. Make sure you cut down any tree limbs and branches hanging over your screened lanais and roof. During a storm, winds can cause these limbs to break off from the tree and cause damage.
You and your family should also be prepared for a storm.
Aside from your property, your safety is always the priority. Since there is no telling how severe damage from a storm will be, we highly recommend that you prepare a disaster supply kit as suggested by the Florida Division of Emergency Management. This kit should include batteries, food, and first aid supplies.

Each person should know when to evacuate and where the evacuation site will be. It is also important to know alert levels announced for your community so you can adjust your plans as necessary.
